SOCIAL JUSTICE – GENEROSITY TOWARDS IDPs( INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS)
After the post election violence that rocked Kenya in January 2008, Mary Mungai joined other “Chapelites” in visiting the Mai Mahiu settlement village where we were seeking to help resettle IDP’s at the Vumilia camp. When Mary visited she was completely moved by their plight, and she started pursing different ways to help them. This included helping them start up farming activities on the property they were on, and also helping educate one of the children with severe physical and mental disability in the camp. A year ago, Mary also donated an acre of land close to the village, to give additional space for these IDP’s to farm and grow both self-sustaining and income-earning crops. She also wanted the land to be used to begin a church. Her generous and kind spirit, and her passion to resettle these who have had a hard time picking up from their difficult circumstances, is a great example of Christian compassion. For this we award her an Oscar.
PASTORAL CARE – PLUG-IN INTERNSHIP
Mbichi Mboroki is a lawyer and an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. In 2010 he joined Plug-In, and it completely transformed him, giving him a new perspective about practical Christianity, especially after his evangelism and Mercy Mission experience. For his 6 month ministry internship, he was assigned to lead a group in ministering to the prisoners at the Short-term prison near Chapel (at Jamuhuri Park). His internship service has been exemplary, and the impact on the prisoners amazing, for which we give him an Oscar. Many of the released former prisoners now look on Nairobi Chapel as their church because of the work Mbichi and his team is doing there. This year we have therefore assigned 2 church planting Pastoral Trainees to begin a Sunday service there, and to help reintegrate the former prisoners back into society. Mbichi and his wife Lois also lead a dynamic E-group that meets every Sunday in their home.

Cynthia Labi joined us at Nairobi Chapel when she and her family came to Kenya to work with World Vision International. One of the things that she and her husband Kwame asked of the Lord, as confirmation that they were to move to Kenya, was that they find a Church within the first week of their arrival to Nairobi – a Church that they could call “home” and nurture their children in. They arrived in Nairobi very early on a Sunday morning and that very morning attended Nairobi Chapel. They immediately felt at home and have fellowshipped with us ever since.
