SOCIAL JUSTICE – GENEROSITY TOWARDS IDPs( INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS)

Mary Muigai

After the post election violence that rocked Kenya in January 2008, Mary Mungai joined other “Chapelites” in visiting the Mai Mahiu settlement village where we were seeking to help resettle IDP’s at the Vumilia camp. When Mary visited she was completely moved by their plight, and she started pursing different ways to help them. This included helping them start up farming activities on the property they were on, and also helping educate one of the children with severe physical and mental disability in the camp. A year ago, Mary also donated an acre of land close to the village, to give additional space for these IDP’s to farm and grow both self-sustaining and income-earning crops. She also wanted the land to be used to begin a church. Her generous and kind spirit, and her passion to resettle these who have had a hard time picking up from their difficult circumstances, is a great example of Christian compassion. For this we award her an Oscar.

PASTORAL CARE – PLUG-IN INTERNSHIP

Mbichi Mboroki

For his 6 month ministry internship, he was assigned to lead a group in ministering to the prisoners at the Short-term prison near Chapel (at Jamuhuri Park). His internship service has been exemplary, and the impact on the prisoners amazing, for which we give him an Oscar. Many of the released former prisoners now look on Nairobi Chapel as their church because of the work Mbichi and his team is doing there. This year we have therefore assigned 2 church planting Pastoral Trainees to begin a Sunday service there, and to help reintegrate the former prisoners back into society. Mbichi and his wife Lois also lead a dynamic E-group that meets every Sunday in their home.

Debbie runs 4 centers currently engaging 320 girls in Nairobi, Kitui, Kisii and Murang’a.Debbie serves as a great role model to the girls because she interacts with them as a peer. She allows them to see her into life and while she challenges them to excellence and distinction, she lives that out her self. This comes from the knowledge that one of the greatest challenges of the ministry is in nurturing self-esteem and self-confidence amongst the girls many of whom come to the centers from very difficult backgrounds.  Without this the other skills they try to impart are almost meaningless.Debbie empowers her staff team unreservedly and has enthused them with caring for the girls at Seed of Hope as passionately as she herself does. Her desire is to see many disadvantaged teenage girls who had lost hope of making anything of their lives find a place of refuge, care, affirmation, love, dignity and opportunity.
